He was 70 years old.<\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-3 fusion_builder_column_2_3 2_3 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:66.666666666667%;--awb-margin-top-large:50px;--awb-spacing-right-large:2.88%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:50px;--awb-spacing-left-large:2.88%;--awb-width-medium:66.666666666667%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:2.88%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:2.88%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2 awb-text-cols fusion-text-columns-2\" style=\"--awb-columns:2;--awb-column-spacing:2em;--awb-column-min-width:100px;\"><p>During his final days, hundreds of family, friends and well-wishers stopped by to pay their respects to Lindsey, who was recognized by the Maui County Council in mid-May as a \u201cbeloved Maui treasure.\u201d Lindsey and his family are well-known for their tireless contributions to the preservation and restoration of Hawaiian culture and lands. Though Lindsey founded or was involved with many organizations on Maui, his primary focus was on native land restoration projects, Malama Honokowai Valley and Malama Kaheawa-Hana\u2019ula, and Hui O Wa\u2019a Kaulua, an organization that is currently constructing a double-hulled voyaging canoe, Naleilehua, named in honor of Ed\u2019s father, Ned Naleilehua Lindsey. Malama Honokowai Valley and Malama Kaheawa-Hana\u2019ula are both under the purview of Maui Cultural Lands Inc., a program spearheaded by Lindsey that focuses on education about Hawaiian lands and culture, as well as restoration, stabilization and preservation of native flora, fauna and archeological sites.<\/p>\n<p>For the Lindsey \u2018ohana, the shifting tides of Ed\u2019s passing have not shifted the focus from the legacy left by Ed and his parents, Ned and Pua Lindsey.<\/p>\n<p>Lindsey\u2019s wife of 45 years, Puanani, said she will maintain the physical part of the work Ed has been doing.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-4 fusion_builder_column_2_3 2_3 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:66.666666666667%;--awb-margin-top-large:50px;--awb-spacing-right-large:2.88%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:50px;--awb-spacing-left-large:2.88%;--awb-width-medium:66.666666666667%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:2.88%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:2.88%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-2 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-center fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:10px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-center fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"margin:0;--fontSize:40;line-height:1.1;\">\u201cI made a promise to Ed that I would carry on the projects as long as I can\u2026 as long as I can use my hands and my legs, I will do the work,\u201d she said. At a meeting of Hui O Wa'a Kaulua, Uncle Ed Lindsey proposes the name \"Naleilehua\" for the new double-hulled voyaging canoe that the group has begun constructing. The vessel was named in honor of Ed's father, Ned Naleilehua Lindsey. According to Ekolu, his father had prepared for lifelong community service during his 25-year teaching career. Lindsey taught for four years in Hana, then later at \u2018Iao Intermediate School in Wailuku, specializing in Hawaiian and Social Studies.<\/p>\n<p>A gifted communicator, Lindsey was consistently approached for his input on handling a wide range of social and environmental issues. He would constantly stress that one must be worthy of the work they are undertaking. In an interview shortly before his death, Ed expounded on the importance of intentionality when embarking on any project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to be correct; you have to be pono from the get-go,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is important that anything [you] do, do it for the right reason. It\u2019s only in doing things for the right reason that your project can move forward. If you cannot do things for the right reason and you are doing it for the me\u2019s, my\u2019s and I\u2019s, that project will suffer great consequences\u2026 It\u2019s the culture that will suffer. If you are pono, you are not afraid of being corrected. If I was trying to present something and I\u2019m not pono, I want to be corrected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ekolu reflected on his father\u2019s talent for creating harmony within a situation: \u201cHe was able to look at a problem from a 360-degree view, and no matter where you were standing within that problem, he could put it in perspective for you and find a win-win situation. It doesn\u2019t bring out the aloha.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Echoing values taught by his father, Ekolu continued, \u201cRealizing where the bad exists helps you stay away from the bad, but cultivate the good in that person\u2026 concentrate on their strengths, not their weakness. Everyone has a weakness, so if you play to their strengths you get more accomplished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As far as carrying on Ed\u2019s legacy, Rose Marie Duey is currently heading up the administrative aspect of Maui Cultural Lands.<\/p>\n<p>Lindsey\u2019s son, Jonathan, is at the forefront of the fieldwork on the projects. Lindsey\u2019s daughter, Lahela Constantino, said that she will be next in line to head up the project, and for now she will prepare for the responsibilities that lie ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will be working side by side with Auntie Rose Marie and learning from her and absorbing her mana and information into my own, and eventually I will be at the front line doing exactly what Dad has been doing\u2026,\u201d said Constantino. \u201cWe will be slowly branching out and getting involved in all these other organizations that Dad was involved with so we can live up to Dad\u2019s legacy tenfold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe taught me a lot\u2014spiritually, mentally\u2014everything,\u201d Lahela added softly. \u201cDad was my teacher. He was everything. I\u2019m going to miss his physical presence\u2014his strength, his smile. I\u2019m going to miss him. He\u2019s my dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A public memorial for Ed Lindsey will be held on Friday, July 3, at 4 p.m. at Waiola Church Hall in Lahaina.
